For over fifty years the Devon Yacht Club has hosted the Lawrence I. Clarke Memorial ‘Round Gardiner’s Island Race.
Established at the end of the era of Sparkman and Stephens designed wooden boats with cloth sails the ‘RGIR has evolved to
include a range of sailboats from the traditional to the most advanced with carbon fiber masts and composite sails. No matter the design the race is one of the most popular on the east end of Long Island.
The course, approximately 24 miles long, affords the competitors every point of sail and varying conditions.
Devon has a long and illustrious history of promoting the technology of sailing and racing. In the late 60s Commodore Lawrence I. Clark, identifying the evolution of our sport, established the ‘RGIR to promote sailing, racing, and bringing together the best sailors in the area for competition.
Over the years we have strived to continuously improve the event with expanded participation and post-race festivities. Held on the DYC beach, all participants and members are invited to enjoy our beach, the atmosphere, music, and BBQ sponsored as in the past by Regatta Craft Mixers. This year we will continue our post-race traditions with fully compliant outdoor dining and social distancing. We will shorten the race if wind conditions dictate so that most competitors arrive back on shore early enough to enjoy the festivities.
Over fifty years later our mission is the same, sailing, competition, and camaraderie.
We look forward to hosting the 2021 ‘RGIR and hope everyone will join us on August 28
th, 2021.
